I was once asked by a "freethinker" how I could accept the idea that a mother of 2 children that donated to charity and spent her entire life helping people, but didn't believe in God or accept the gift of Salvation could receive the same punishment as a murder that killed 10 people in a brutal fashion and also didn't believe in God. Now this kind of question is presented a lot of times by people that don't accept Christ and I always answer that sin is sin in God's eyes.
I answer that everyone is guilty of sin even the mother that donates to charity. The Bible says that the punishment for sin is death. It does not say that the punishment for large sins is death, but the small sins will not receive any punishment; it says the wages of ALL sin is death. The only way to escape the death penalty that all of us face from the moment we knowingly sin (I believe that babies and young children aren't held to the same accountability for sin as older people that know right and wrong and are able to understand and accept salvation though Jesus Christ) is to confess and accept Jesus's sacrifice for us on the cross. If we do not accept God's Grace then we are doomed to face our death penalty and will spend eternity in hell.
Sometimes this answer is accepted and a lot of times it isn't; in our love for sin it makes it hard for some of us to accept the truth.
